Fixed braces are suitable for patients with developed permanent teeth – usually around the age of 12. In some special circumstances it is possible to start earlier when no premolars and incisors are visible. Individual cases are assessed by the orthodontist.
Am I too old for fixed braces?
There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment. The only limitation could be the state of health of teeth and gums.
How long does the whole treatment take?
Fixed braces treatment takes approximately 2 years. The same length of time is required for maintenance of the finished result – using removable foils or retainer. Retainer is a thin wire glued to the inside of the bottom teeth which helps to keep the teeth fixed in position.
Does it hurt?
Hypersensitivity and mild aches are common during the first week after fitting fixed braces. This discomfort is mainly felt the evening and the morning after the braces were fitted. Usually, from the third day this discomfort recedes and towards the first week things come back to normal.
Do fixed braces limit me in my everyday life?
During the first few days it is necessary to modify food consistency and follow the orthodontist’s recommendations. You can also experience impaired articulation. The majority of patients get used to the braces after the first week. It does not interfere in their everyday life; it does not limit their concentration at school, work or sport. Wind instrument musicians need specific consultation.
Can my braces look discreet?
There are types of locks that are less prominent in your mouth (miniature locks, sapphire locks and ceramic locks). Other options are braces fixed on the inside of your teeth or removable see-through foils (see treatment methods).
Thanks to these variations orthodontic treatment is more pleasant and easier to get used to. Different locks have different properties and are not suitable for all treatments. The best suitability is judged by the orthodontist.
Can my teeth under the braces be affected by cavities?
No. Each individual part of the brace is attached to the teeth with special materials which release fluoride. There can be no cavities found under the braces. However if you do not perform proper mouth hygiene your teeth around the braces can be affected.
How much money does orthodontic treatment cost?
Initial orthodontic examination, diagnosis and preliminary consultation costs CZK380. The price of braces is dependent on the defect, complexity and duration of treatment as well as the quality and quantity of materials used. The price of fixed braces for one jaw starts at CZK6500.
What will happen after removing of the fixed braces?
After removing of the fixed braces it is essential to keep the achieved position of the teeth and dental arches to prevent its regression. Patients often underestimate this part of the treatment.
On the same day when the fixed braces are removed every patient receives a removable brace for the upper jaw and a retainer is glued to the back of the bottom teeth. Alternatively a transparent foil which is not visible and does not impair the articulation can be used.
